How To Make A Mini Oyster Shell Candle Holder

Filed Under: oyster shells, diy and craftAugust 16, 2013

If you love the natural beauty of oysters, along with their versatility for craft making,  Then you will love how to make a mini Oyster shell candle holder.

How To Make A Mini Oyster Shell Candle Holder

DIY Mini Oyster Shell Candle Holder:

I have made my share of oyster shell crafts. The one that I am most proud is the oyster shell candle holder. It was pretty intricate candle holder with over 50 oyster shells. Ittook hours to make and its not easy. I thought it be fun to make a smaller version of the large one. It much easier and only require 8-12 shells. You can get the oyster shell at Amazon.

How to make a small candle holder:How To Make A Mini Oyster Shell Candle Holder

Supplies Needed :

  • 8-12 oyster shells (Try to set aside oyster shells that are the similar size)
  • Cup
  • Hot glue sticks & glue gun
  • Small candle (Small enough to fit in the center of the candle holder)
  • Cider Vinegar

Cleaning The Oyster shells

Use a combination of water and cider vinegar. The cider vinegar lightens naturally without any chemical smell or irritation to the skin.

2 cup of cider vinegar to 2 gallons of water. Make sure the shells are all covered. Let sit for one day. With a little brush, remove all the debris from the shell. It should come off very easily. Let them dry individually in the fresh air. They must be completely dry before applying the glue.

How To Make The Candle Holder:

Place 3 oyster shells in a cup. Glue them together to form a cup shape. You will use this to build on. Let them try for a a hour before you proceeding with the other layers.

Creating Oyster Shell Candle Holder

Take the three shell out and place right side up on a board or books forming the cup.

Start adding the second layer of shells under neath the three shells. Let the layers dry in between. Then start adding more. Since this is for a small oyster shell candle holder you will only need about 12 oyster total. For a large one check out my post on making a large oyster shell candle holder.

It would be helpful to see how you formed the base to make it sit level. Is the bottom of the cup used for the base?

You can staple driftwood on the bottom or you can do it without stapling drift wood on the botton.. thats easier. I just did a drift wood vase that can be used as a candle holder too that the glass vase is the bottom. Go back to my home page and its the post before the Social Media Mixer. Thanks Maria

My daughter sent me your picture and wants me to make one for her. I have made the Magnolia out of oyster shells and they turned out great. I think this will also. Thanks for the idea.

I made some and loved how they turned out, but the candles melted the glue and they fell apart. Anyone else have this problem?

No I use mine all the time. Make sure you used the heavy duty glue from Walmart. You can purchase some and glue them back on.
      Thanks

I don’t understand how to start this with the oyster shells in the cup. How is it flat if you do it that way. I’m sorry, just not clear on how to start.

What a lovely idea and at the rate we consume oysters I should be able to make quite a few 😉
