Can’t find the perfect pillow? Then create your own. I was looking for a coastal pillow made with good fabric for my new white couches, but could not find anything I could afford with a coastal feel. Here is a tutorial on a DIY easy envelope pillow with a coastal theme. This is a great opportunity to create your own pillows exactly the way you want with the perfect fabric.
I did some digging on how to make the easiest pillows and found that the envelope pillow cover is the fastest to make. I am going to show you 4 simple steps on how to do this.
- Measure your pillow insert and multiply it by 2 and add 6 inches that the length of the fabric you need to cut. For example, my pillow insert was (23 by 23) 23 X 2 =46 add 6 inches for the seams and overlap of fabric.
- Take the ends of the fabric and fold 1/4 over. Please iron that, fold over again and iron. Do that for both ends. Sew those seams up.
- Place pillow in the center of the fabric and overlap the fabric on each end so the opening of the envelope pillow is in the center.
- You will be sewing both sides inside out. Once done you can put the pillow insert through the opening. It’s that easy.
I am so happy how they turned out. If you have no issues with your sewing machine it should be very quick to make these envelope pillows. It took me 15 minutes to make each pillow. I love my couches with fewer pillows but I wanted to show you how multiple pillows look.
Tip: Buy quality fabric, you will get more fabric for your money and the weight of the fabric is heavier for home decor projects. Always get a width of 55 inches or wider. I found my fabric at Discount Fabric. It was $16 a yard on sale, normally $25.00. I was able to make 3 large pillows with two yards. Total investment for my two pillows were $32.00. I had the inserts so that saved money. The pillows ended costing me $11 each. If you were to buy inserts that would be extra. Large high end pillows from Pottery Barn or William Sonoma start at $70 and go as high as $300.
