How To Make a Mosaic Flower Pot From Old Tea Cups

Filed Under: diy and craft, home and gardenMarch 29, 2019

Here is why I think mosaic tile projects are so cool! They are a stylish addition in any garden and make a fun craft project. There is an old world charm to it. When I visited Italy there are mosaic garden pots everywhere throughout the ancient buildings and gardens. To learn How To Make a Mosaic Flower Pot From Old Tea Cups, take an ordinary terra-cotta pot and gather some small colorful tiles, broken tea cups or saucers. Once you learn to make this you will be trying it on everything.

I have been collecting old china plates and teacups for years. The best place to find old plates is at a thrift store or flea market. Look for plates that have flowers and patterns on them. China plates are the best to use when broken but you can use tea cups if they are broken in pieces that are relatively flat.

Supplies

  • White Grout
  • Broken China
  • Morter or Epoxy Glue
  • Small Garden Pot
  • Sponge
  • Tile Pliers
  • Hammer
  • Fabric & plastic.
  • Grout Sealer

Step 1

Break China:

To break the china place the cups or saucers in a plastic bag and put that inside a burlap bag or fabric. With a hammer, you can bang away. Remove the cracked pieces. You can use a tile pliers to break pieces that are still too big. You can find them at your hardware store.

Here’s How!

Step 2

Design your pattern and color scheme:

To create mosaic tile patterns take the China that is broken and start a color scheme on how you want the tiles to look on the pot!

Step 3

Applying Grout:

Take 3 cups of grout. Mix 1 cup of water into the grout. Use a  painting pan. The consistency should look like cooked oatmeal. Cover the entire pot with the grout filling all the crevices. Let sit for 15 minutes. Take a sponge and take off the excess grout until it’s all smooth. Be careful not to take off too much. Clean the tiles until shiny. Let dry overnight.

Step 4

Sealing:

After the grout dries for 24 hours. Seal the surface of the tiles and grout with a grout sealer. Use a paintbrush to apply the sealer. Let dry for a few hours. Now you can plant any plant you like.

Oh, I love mosaics, especially the ones that use old dinnerware. There’s just something so special about the fact that the broken bits get given a new purpose in life.

Oh Maria, I love this! I have actually saved several broken pots and cups with the plan of doing something with them someday…and now I know what I need to do! Thanks for the inspiration.

    Hugs, Lynn
