8 Safe Bug Proof Remedies For Your Home

8 safe bug proof remedies for your home. These bug proof ideas can easily rid you of pesky bugs.

Owning a home can be expensive especially if you have monthly services like pest control. My monthly pest control bill was getting high to spray for pesky bugs like, palmetto big, spiders or ants. I decided to inspect my home to see where they were coming from. I noticed several spaces where there were cracks like under the bathroom vanity, wood gaps, and much more.

I decided to do my own pest control. I was pleasantly surprise to see that I had fewer bugs and I didn’t see more bug from doing it myself with these remedies.

8 SAfe Bug Proof REmedies

1. Seal Entry Points

• Gaps & Cracks: Inspect for and seal cracks or gaps around windows, doors, pipes, and walls. Use caulk for small cracks and weather stripping for doors and windows.

• Screens: Repair any tears in window or door screens to prevent insects from entering. Consider using fine mesh to block smaller bugs.

• Door Sweeps: Install door sweeps at the bottom of doors leading outside to keep out crawling bugs.

2. Maintain Cleanliness • Food & Crumbs: Keep food sealed in containers and clean up crumbs promptly to avoid attracting bugs.

• Trash Cans: Use tightly closed lids for trash cans and empty them regularly.

• Countertops & Surfaces: Regularly wipe down surfaces with a vinegar solution (which also deters bugs) to remove food residue.

3. Manage Moisture Levels

• Fix Leaks: Bugs like cockroaches are drawn to moisture, so fix any leaky pipes or drippy faucets.

• Use Dehumidifiers: In humid areas, use a dehumidifier to keep indoor moisture levels down, making the environment less attractive to insects.

4. Natural Repellents

• Essential Oils: Peppermint, lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus oils deter insects. Mix a few drops in water and spray around doorways, windows, and other entry points.

• Vinegar & Lemon: Use a vinegar and lemon solution as a natural repellent on countertops and in areas bugs may frequent.

• Diatomaceous Earth: Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth in areas where bugs might enter. This powder is non-toxic to humans and pets but lethal to insects.

5. Use Physical Barriers

• Sticky Traps: Place sticky traps in areas prone to insect activity to catch bugs.

• Covers for Drains: Use mesh covers on drains to prevent drain flies and other insects from emerging.

• Light Control: Insects are attracted to light, so avoid leaving outdoor lights on at night. Use yellow “bug lights” if lighting is necessary.

6. Outdoor Landscaping

• Maintain Yard: Keep grass and plants trimmed and remove leaf piles, as insects can breed in damp, dark areas.

• Move Mulch: Keep mulch at least 12 inches away from your foundation to discourage insects from migrating indoors.

• Standing Water: Eliminate standing water in items like bird baths, plant saucers, or gutters, as these attract mosquitoes and other insects.

7. Regular Inspections

• Periodically check for signs of bug activity, especially in dark, hidden areas like basements, attics, and under sinks, so you can act quickly if needed.
