Palmetto Bluff Home Lighthouse Award:BEST OVERALL HOME
We’re moving into our new home, even though it’s in the middle of construction. It’s been a crazy experience, but we’ve learned a lot. My husband and I have both learned how to build our dream home from scratch. We had an amazing builder who worked with us as a team. We all learned from each other and shared our knowledge and expertise. I love simple and classic designs, and my husband prefers traditional designs with a touch of old-world charm. Our builders, Reclamation By Design, are known for building one-of-a-kind homes with sustainable elements, which is exactly what my husband and I wanted.
Because of the uniqueness of our home, our builder felt that it should be entered in the Prestigious Lighthouse Award for the Coastal Carolina Home Builders Association. I was excited and said “Sure!”, but never thought it would actually win. Unbeknownst to us, it won for Best Bath, Best Kitchen and Best Overall in the Custom Homes category. So, sit back, relax and enjoy a tour of our award-winning home!

The outdoor walkway serves as an excellent and convenient path for entering the house directly from the garage. It not only provides easy access but also enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the home’s exterior. This thoughtfully designed walkway offers a smooth transition from your vehicle to the comfort of your living space, ensuring both functionality and style. Whether it’s a sunny day or a rainy evening, the sturdy, well-laid path ensures safe and hassle-free movement between the garage and the house.

This stairway has a really cool feature – a bookcase! It was designed to give a traditional area a modern twist, which is exactly my style.

Palmetto Bluff Home Lighthouse Award: Best Kitchen
The kitchen and dining room are all in a loft style. The island is made from reclaimed wood, and the kitchen fan is made from tabby with wrapped reclaimed wood.

So, my husband had this brilliant idea to turn our pantry into a prep room. We found all the supplies ourselves and had the builder install the reclaimed shelving with plumbing pipes. It’s a total game-changer!

The dining room and family room ceilings are adorned with old beams. These beams were discovered in an old warehouse in Georgia.

The fireplace in the family room is made from tabby and a reclaimed beam for the mantle.

Reclamation by Design is famous for their barn-style doors. I had this idea to use old barn wood for the doors. Another dream I had was to have concrete flooring throughout most of the house. It was a work in progress and not an easy task. You can read more about the process here.

The upstairs guest bathroom was originally quite small, with a standard tub and shower. So, we moved some space from the bedroom closet, which was huge, to make the bathroom bigger. We also added a fancy tub with a separate shower. I think it was worth the extra cost.

Now, let’s talk about my favorite part – the master bedroom suite. We added barn wood to the ceiling to give it a French touch. At first, the builder wasn’t keen on whitewashing the ceiling because he thought it would ruin the wood’s character. But I did some research and found a bunch of Pinterest photos of whitewashed wood. With the right painter, I knew it could turn out amazing, and it did! Trust your instincts!

Best Bath
A simple bathtub can make a world of difference. This one was a true masterpiece, designed and built by the builder himself. He carved into the concrete flooring and created an oval-shaped space, filling it with river rock. The tub was set on top of this river rock, giving it a natural, riverbed-like feel.

My husband’s the outdoorsy one, while I’m more of an interior person. But guess what? He’s got a knack for designing outdoor spaces! He created this amazing layout for our backyard. There’s a firepit on the left side of the house, and an outdoor kitchen on the right. And the paths you see? They’re designed to give our backyard an estate-like feel. I was so impressed with how much we saved by doing this ourselves.

Let me tell you about our little half bath. The vanity is made from some awesome reclaimed wood that we had leftover from another project. And guess what? The ceiling is the same as our master bedroom! It’s painted in a lovely white wash and made from reclaimed barn wood. Oh, and the pièce de resistance is my favorite 18th-century antique mirror that hangs right over it. Isn’t it just beautiful?

Your home is absolutely gorgeous! It’s been fun watching the process, and now seeing the end result. What a beautiful space!

Your made me night with your kind words! The screen porch is such a great room for hanging out and entertaining friend and family, its worth the added expense to have it part of the building budget. Hugs Maria
Maria, Your home is marvelous! I am especially enamored of the tabby fireplace. Was this done on site or is it panels? I live in a coastal home in Maryland and have a red brick fireplace cr.1982 and would love to do this treatment. Any advice or source information would be appreciated. BTW..I found you via Rhoda at Southern Hospitality.
Hello Janet, First thanks for visiting my blog, I was so honored to be featured at Rhoda Blog! What you can do is contact a concrete expert or mason and ask them if they can add the tabby mixture, which is a combination of concrete and crushed shells over the brick. The other option which is more work, is they sheet rock over the brick and then they can add the tabby mixture over the sheet rock. My guy add the tabby mixture over the sheet rock of the form of the fireplace.
Hope that helps, contact me any time. Maria
Hi, Maria! You are lucky you made it through the hurricane with just one tree. We are on Saint Simons Island presently and the house we’re renting was virtually untouched. We did have to evacuate for 5 days. Hope never to go through that again!!I’m glad you are fine and your house weathered the storm. Have a great day!!
