To add some charm to white walls I hung 9 framed maps in my son’s bedroom of different parts of coastal waterways in Europe. I purchased the maps at an Antique Shop . These maps show the different waterways in Europe. I am a big fan of historical maps and there are so many things you can do with them.
You can find full size maps in many places such as Etsy, Ebay and sometimes like where I found these at an Antique shop. The maps are very full size so I was able to cut 9 maps sections from them. Hope you get inspired by this charming DIY framed coastal map.
LETS GET STARTED
Choose the right frame. I love skinny frames all the same size so I purchased 9 – 11/by 14 unfinished ones from Frames USA, the glass is included. I saved a fortune by framing them myself. You will also need to purchase 9 – 11/by 14 foam boards to glue the maps on them. Those can be found at Micheals Craft Store. Last, I used left over paint from my home to paint the frames an off white color. It took longer to paint them by hand than I anticipated, so I suggest to use spray paint it’s much easier and faster.
CUTTING THE MAPS
The best way to cut the maps is to spread the maps on an open table and outline the foam board on the maps with pencil. You can outline any which way you like. Once you cut all the maps use a good craft glue and spread the glue evenly all over the maps, no gobs of glue on the maps or they won’t adhere to the foam boards smoothly.
Once all your foam boards are done insert them into the frame and add the glass. You are now ready to hang them on your wall. I hung in a series of three to create a wall art of 9 charming maps.
To calculate how much distance between each map, measure the distance from the top of the frame to the hanging wire or hook. Starting from the mark you made to indicate where your frame’s top will go, measure down (aligning with your wall’s center mark) to pinpoint the place where your nail will go. Mark this spot with a small x.
Hanging the maps was the hardest and thanks to my husband he was a big help. If you have any additional questions do not hesitate to contact me. For more framed prints, see my framed botanicals and learn how to hang your framed prints
