How To Hand Paint Garden Pots With Chinoiserie Designs

I write this post during a difficult time. If you are like me and trying to keeping busy with garden projects then you will love my idea of how to hand paint garden pots with chinoiserie designs.

Painting your old pots is an easy and inexpensive way to dress up your outdoor garden space. The best part of painting for me is coming up with designs for my post. I love the look of chinoiserie designs. What is chinoiserie?  For me its an obsession with Chinese pottery. The beautiful blue and white design on the pottery is what I love. It originated in Europe from what I read but there is a vast history behind this ancient art that goes back hundreds of years. Here is an interesting post on How Chinoiserie Changed the World.

Supplies

• Pots (plastic or clay)
• Paint
• Artist brush
• White Spray Paint
• Plants
• Soil
• fine point blue marker

Step 1. Paint Garden Pots White

Clean the pots before you paint them, Spraypaint them white. Make sure they are covered completely and now showing of the old color. This is important since that can affect the artwork behind this.

Step 2. Creating Chinoiserie Designs.

I have been doing lots of projects with chinoiserie. I kept the designs simple. I set out and made a plan on what chinoiserie patterns to use. I went with floral and leaves. The floral and leaves are easy to do and you can get the instructions from this post. It’s very easy to make the leaves and flowers just practice on a sheet of paper.

Step 3. Painting The Designs.

With artist brush #3 paint the leaves and flowers with blue paint. Don’t add to much paint on the brush dab any drips onto paint palette or a glass dish. I used Acrylic paint from Plaid Folkart for my paint.

Step 4. Drying The Garden Pots

Let the garden pots dry in a cool place for 24 hours. What’s great about this acrylic paint its waterproof once it dries. Its ideal for outdoors.

 

Step 5: Adding Plants.

Now that the pots have dried overnight we can add plants. In this part, I thought little garden education would be fun for my grandkids. This part they can help me plant little vegetable plants. It was easy for them to do since the vegetables came with the soil. They pulled out the plants with the soil and placed inside the garden pot. Since these kiddos love to dig dirt, I let them dig the dirt in my back yard for the larger pots.
