How To Transform a Buffet Cabinet into a Bedroom Dresser

I moved into my new homes 4 months ago and some of the furniture colors were not going to work. My new home has a minimalistic look and the colors are very light and soft. My goal is to paint the red dresser a shade of beige.

I love painting furniture, it’s very relaxing for me. It’s also the simplest and least expensive way to give your bedroom a new look.

My challenge in this project is changing the red to a beige. It’s going to require some good coverage techniques in which I will show you in this guide how to change the color of your bedroom dresser.

sand the dresser first: I needed a dresser for my guest room fast. Check out how to transformed a old buffet cabinet into a bedroom dresser

Step 1: Sanding

The best way to start repainting this red dresser to the new color beige is to sand the dresser lightly. Remove all the drawers from the dresser and take off any knobs. Use an electric sander and make sure you sand the entire dresser. Clean off the dust from the dress with a damp sponge. Thoroughly dry the dresser with a lint-free cloth.

Tip: This part is very important because little particles of dust can make the paint job look messy. Here his a very good article on sanding.

Step 2:Primer

I want the paint to last along time, so I applied white primer all over. This will give cover the red and provide a quality finish. Some experts say that doing both is unnecessary. That’s true but because this is a red color, it’s going to be tough to not use a primer. The red will show through the beige paint. Sanding will take a layer of red paint which will make it so much easier to paint.

Step 3:Paint

A new coat of paint does wonders for just about anything. It can completely make everything you paint look amazing. I applied the first coast of beige paint. Let it dry for a few hours and apply a second coat,  then a third coat. That should do it for painting. Now the knobs.

Step 4: Knobs

The old knobs were very dark and dated so I purchased some blush gold knobs. It was difficult taking the old knobs off since they have been on this antique dresser for over 50 years. Some of the holes were very large so I added some wood fill. I let the wood filler dry and drilled a hole for the new knobs. I was so happy with the way it transformed my dresser.

Nice job…I’m guessing you used oil based primer…that’s a bleeder (it’s red because it’s mahogany and/or mahogany stain) and really needs the stain blocking. I’ve done so many mahogany pieces, the primer is inevitable.

  4. Hi Maria, I love how your dresser has transformed! It was pretty before but now it really fits your coastal style!!! It is pretty amazing how paint can transform furniture. I am really thinking about painting my French commode/dresser. I’ve thought about it for years and now that the top needs to be pulled off and all the top pieces re-glued together, now might be the right time. I also found the prettiest French transfers…
