Do you love picking up pinecones?
Every year I feel like I am part of the landscape. I pick up pinecones, acorns, and everything along the way during my nature walk to the point where I actually feel like I am a bird or chipmunk. I think I am the only one in my neighborhood that does this. It’s a shame because there are so many different projects you can do with these treasures.
I gathered all the pinecones and for the last few weeks, I have been bleaching them. I got inspired when I picked up the latest catalog of Serena & Lily and on the last page was this gorgeous blond pine cone wreath with a big blue bow. I had to make that for my new home.
The Bleaching Process
Bleaching the pinecones and creating the wreath takes about a week to do.
- I took 3 cups of bleach to 2 gallons of water.
- Add all the pinecones into the solution.
- Lay a few bricks over them so they don’t float to the top.
- After 24 hours remix the pinecones and let soak for another day.
Two days later I rinsed them off and let dry outside for another day. The weather was pretty warm so they dried pretty fast. There were a few that needed more heat, I placed those in the oven at 200 degrees until they opened up. It took a few hours.
Wreath & Tablescape
I was so amazed how the pinecones coloring turned into different shades of blond. They are perfect for all kinds of projects and decor accents on a table. I made that wreath I loved so much. With the remainders, I added them to my dining room table. Each pinecone is unique and to me that is beautiful.
Here is a small tutorial of the wreath.
- Cut some of the pinecones in half using a small hand pruner.
- Glue stick them to a wreath.
- Let dry for a few hours
- Add a big colorful bow.
