The end of the year is always a lot of mixed emotions for me, so I generally like to keep New Year’s Eve low-key. I’d rather spend my night with family or a few friends, rather than going to a busy, overcrowded restaurant. This New Year’s, I created a simple menu of homemade pasta and bolognese sauce (to be posted) and decorated the dining table with rustic wood pieces, plus a few flowers here and there.

There is something magical about dining by candlelight, so I added candles throughout the table.

I started making my tablescape the afternoon of NYE. I have a huge crush on collecting wood slices. They can be expensive, so I have been taken advantage of all the fallen trees from this year’s hurricane.  My husband had cut some wood slices with the chain saw as well, so I utilized those! The freshly cut wood has a gorgeous smell. It’s my favorite way to get wood slices, but if you don’t have that luxury, buying them on sale is the next best thing!

  • 10 coaster wood slices
  • 2 large wood slices
  • 4 glass candles
  • 6 bunches of baby’s breath
  • 2 star fish trees

For a party of six I added 6 slices as coasters for the wine glasses. The four remaining slices are placed on each side of the center large wood slices. For a conversation piece,  I added my star fish trees as part of the centerpiece. DIY here. To finish off the tablescape, I scattered the baby’s breath all around. The New Year tablescape came out really well! Rustic, simple and pretty!

As I reflect on my year, the rustic look of this centerpiece makes me appreciate the beauty of nature and how we are so blessed to be inspired by it.! How will you be using nature in 2017?! Happy New Year!

Best place to purchase the wood slices is Marshalls. To create the star fish tree… see here. Also next  will be posting my home made pasta and bolgnese sauce which was our meal for New Years Eve!
